Types of addiction
Certain substances are more likely to be abused by professionals due to their specific chemical effects. Stimulants such as cocaine help to increase productivity at work, and depressants such as alcohol stimulate relaxation after a long day in the office, or calm anxiety and stress. The problem is that these substances are not only harmful but also addictive, and as the user builds up a tolerance to their effects, so the abuse increases until it interferes with and harms their daily life.
Certain behavioural addictions such as gambling can also be fostered in a workplace environment and it is important that management know the signs of these addictions and how to handle them.
This section gives information about some of the most commonly abused substances in the workplace, their side effects, and how to find treatment.
