Crack cocaine addiction

Crack Cocaine Addiction & Abuse: Signs, Help & Therapy

You don’t need us to tell you that crack addiction is a serious and deadly problem.

If you take a crack or know someone who does, you will already know how devastating it can be for their lives and yours.

But you’re not alone. The UK has the highest crack cocaine addiction levels in Europe, with an estimated 180,000 users.

These figures tend to be growing year on year [1].

But take it from us – we’ve experienced addiction and helped many people get to the other side. Drugs may make you feel good momentarily, but we’ll help you be the best version of yourself for the rest of your life.

Crack cocaine: An overview

How to spot an addiction?

  • Using alone without other people knowing
  • Hiding your usage
  • Memory loss
  • Lying about the amount you take
  • Using it to shut out negative thoughts
  • Trying to forget memories or traumas
  • Trying to numb any pain – physical or psychological
  • Using it to turn down thoughts of guilt and shame
  • Others are concerned about your behaviour
  • Turning into a different person

Over 10,000 patients have passed through our rehab centre’s doors since 1988, and the majority have gone on to achieve, long-term abstinent recovery from their addictions – Castle Craig.

Getting help

Do you sometimes feel like you need help, but other times think you’re just fine, and at other times you don’t care?

We invite you to take a look at the following questions, and if you answer yes to any of them, we would encourage you to get in touch, find help and get better.

  1. Do you ever feel sad, hopeless, empty or worthless?
  2. Do you have any hobbies? Do you find yourself far away from the things you used to love?
  3. Do you lack energy and motivation?
  4. Is it difficult to get to sleep or stay asleep? Is it hard to get up in the mornings?
  5. Do you feel guilty? Scorned? Shameful? Does this make you avoid friends and family?

Why do you feel at home around troubled people? Why do you turn to crack to cope?

Treatment at a residential rehab provides adequate time to begin working on the answers to these questions.

The therapy side of the programme aims to remove the user’s feelings of guilt, shame, rejection and regret and instead replace them with increased self-esteem and self-respect.

Treatment: Crack cocaine rehab

Drug detoxification and therapy are two successful ways to treat crack addiction.

Treatment for crack addiction typically lasts from 28 to 90 days, however, this will depend on your progress and any dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorders identified.

Shorter, more intensive programmes are effective, with longer stays being prescribed to those with long-term usage or tougher, more problematic addiction issues.

Rehab can be attended as an outpatient or inpatient, although in our experience, we would recommend inpatient, residential rehab stays as you are immersed in treatment and recovery.

Learn new habits

The detox segment of treatment for crack addiction typically takes a week.

Once the patient has been alleviated of the physical cravings of the drug, they will then begin to address the psychological damage of the addiction – and it’s this part of the programme where the real work begins.

Types of therapy for crack addiction

Therapy will lie at the core of your addiction treatment.

There is a great variety of various therapeutic models and methodologies, which are transferred in group settings and 1-1 therapy sessions.

Models like CBT, motivational interviewing and complementary therapies can be used to address and understand the psychological causes of problematic behaviours.

Therapy will teach patients how to learn from their mistakes, improve their mental health and reduce the likelihood of retorting back to old risky behaviours.

Treatment will help you to break the connection with the mindset that drives you to smoke crack in the first place, which will also try to prevent you from moving on to other forms of stimulants in the future.

Why rehab works

Addiction specialists and psychiatrists know that it’s not the frequency or the number of drugs you take that’s the real problem.

True addiction recovery will work on healing your relationship with yourself.

This is so that your addiction therapist will be able to identify the reasons you choose to turn to harmful drugs in the first place.

Addiction treatment is often successful because it breaks the cycle of addiction.

First rehab gets you sober and then therapists take a deeper look at the truth behind your behaviour.
