Xanax Addiction

What is Xanax?

Alprazolam is a prescription benzodiazepine sedative. Alprazolam is the active ingredient in Xanax, the most commonly prescribed psychiatric medication in the United States.

As part of the benzodiazepine family of drugs, Xanax is one of the most highly addictive prescription drugs on the market and can lead to addiction if used long-term. It is extremely dangerous when combined with alcohol or drugs and can even lead to death.

Xanax is sold on the street under different names: Xannies/Zannies, Handlebars, Blue footballs, Benzos.

What is Alprazolam (Xanax) Prescribed For?

Xanax is a powerful benzodiazepine. As such it produces calming effects through the release of a chemical called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which slows down brain activity. Doctors usually prescribe Xanax for the treatment of anxiety disorder, depression, panic attacks, insomnia, nausea caused by chemotherapy.

Since Xanax is a central-nervous-system depressant, common side-effects of abusing Xanax include decreased alertness and response time, slurred speech, blurred vision, manic moods, headaches, memory problems, impaired coordination, heart palpitations and swelling in hands and feet.

Xanax Detox Programme

Withdrawal from Xanax addiction leads to different symptoms, such as sleeplessness, sweating, nervousness, anxiety, depression, anger, tingling sensation in hands and feet and rebound symptoms. Rebound effects are intensified feelings of a pre-existing disorder that the Xanax had been initially prescribed for and which may include insomnia, anxiety, panic disorders.

At Castle Craig, our patients’ physical and psychological comfort during detox is a priority. Our Consultant Psychiatrist will assess each patient individually and prescribe a personalised Xanax detox regime that suits the patient’s medical and drug use history.

The safest detox method is tapering off Xanax by gradually cutting back on the dosage daily over a period of time until the patient’s body readjusts and their system is completely free of drugs.

We provide round-the-clock medically supervised Xanax detox. Our nursing staff regularly monitors patients throughout the day to ensure each patient is safely detoxing. This also allows the doctor to adjust the Xanax detox plan accordingly, based on each patient’s progress. Other medication may be used to help ease the alprazolam (Xanax) withdrawal symptoms.

Rehab Treatment for Alprazolam (Xanax) Addiction

Besides detox, people struggling with Xanax addiction need to attend a comprehensive inpatient rehab programme, like the one we offer at Castle Craig. Our specialised rehabilitation program is one of the most effective treatment options for Xanax addiction.

Once any severe withdrawal symptoms have subsided in detox, mental cravings are addressed in each patient’s individual treatment plan. Each patient has a personal therapist to discuss their issues during individual counselling. This is complemented in specialist group therapy, where other patients share their stories in a common framework of learning healthy coping skills for a sober life.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a valuable therapy for Xanax addiction because patients will explore the patterns of thought and behaviour that led to Xanax abuse.

Castle Craig’s holistic treatment programme for Xanax addiction makes use of complementary therapies, 12-step support groups, educational lectures, regular meals and exercise for s sustained recovery. We also offer dual-diagnosis treatment to help patients fight any underlying psychological issues that contributed to their Xanax addiction.

We supervise each patient and remain their trusted recovery resource after they leave treatment through a personalised two-year aftercare plan.
