Porn Addiction Nottingham

Pornography Compulsion – Addiction Recovery in Nottingham

Porn addiction undoubtedly ruins lives, families and relationships.

For the addicted, porn consumes their life, changing their behaviours and sense of self.

The loved ones of these individuals also suffer and experience feelings of rejection, humiliation, betrayal, isolation, depression and anger.

The combination of these emotions alone can create conflict in your relationship. Sometimes, when your partner is unwilling to listen, express, or understand why you feel the way you do and what you’re going through, it only isolates the user and may prevent them from getting help.

As addiction experts, we know how scary it can be to come forward to get help.

With porn, we can imagine it’s even harder to admit – especially when you have to vocalise it over the phone or to a member of the opposite sex.

It’s scary, and it’s perfectly acceptable to feel this way.

We want you to know that we’ve seen, understood, and treated it all before. So, let it be us if you’re looking for someone to trust.

Any addiction is harmful to your mental and physical health

However, when do you know when you’ve hit bottom? When is there a right time to get help, if there is one? Porn addiction, like many substance and behavioural addictions, causes the afflicted to feel very shameful and embarrassed of their condition. And this, of course, is understandable.

However, the fear of judgement and the truth can prevent you from getting the help you need to live your life the way you were meant to live it.

There an estimated 1.2 million porn addicts in the UK. Source.

What you should know about pornography addiction

  • Addiction is a primary, chronic disease of brain reward, motivation, memory and related circuitry. Dysfunction in these circuits leads to characteristic biological, psychological, social and spiritual manifestations. This is reflected in an individual pathologically pursuing reward and/or relief from substance use and other behaviours. Source.

With any behavioural addiction, the foundation of the addiction is in the brain’s reward centre, where dopamine production stimulates the brain to create impulses that encourage you to repeat a specific behaviour (in this case, pornography consumption).

The more you repeat this behaviour, the more easily dopamine is stimulated, creating a pleasurable sensation for the user when the behaviour is re-engaged with.

However, on the other side, when users do not re-engage with the behaviour, the brain will produce unpleasant sensations when the affected individual goes too long without engaging in the behaviour.

Unlike other process addictions, there is an added neurochemical and hormonal element to porn addiction. When paired with masturbation, the chemicals associated with sexual arousal release and affect the brain’s reward centre. That’s why sex and masturbation are considered potentially addictive behaviours.

It is also entirely possible for an individual to become addicted to porn without ever engaging in sexual activity or masturbation.

Co-occurring disorders help in Nottingham

Patients surveyed with a pron addiction in Nottingham and across the UK have also been suffering from other disorders like depression or anxiety.

Treatment will vary slightly in cases with a dual diagnosis for a behavioural addiction and a mental health issue, as therapists and professionals also work on treating the co-occurring disorder alongside the addiction.

There is the belief that other disorders contribute to and result from addictions. However, no rule says someone with a given disorder will develop substance abuse or porn addiction. Nor does it mean that those addicted to porn can develop a co-occurring disorder.

Treatment for porn addiction near Nottingham

Inpatient Rehab | Outpatient Services | 1-1 Therapy

There are different approaches within the medical community to treat porn addiction. One approach is similar to one taken with other forms of addiction, which involve psychotherapy, particularly CBT. However, many other therapy models are often also deployed, with certain specialising therapists developing their treatment programmes.

However, for total transparency, various private rehabs across the UK do not treat porn addiction. In contrast, some will treat porn addiction alongside another substance abuse disorder like alcohol or drugs. Then there are rarely solely dedicated facilities (some do exist that are not for profit).
