It’s hard to know what to expect from addiction treatment, and this lack of knowledge can make you feel wary or apprehensive about considering a rehabilitation centre.
We have compiled a list of things to expect from rehab – during and post-treatment – so that you can rest assured that it is the best way to help you on your way to sobriety.
If you need support, our team are on-call to help 24/7.

1. They will need a lot of information
Many treatment centres tailor individual programs to suit your specific case and needs. In order for them to do this, they need a lot of information.
It is important to be truthful. There is no judgement and there is complete confidentiality, so you can rest assured that your case is treated with the utmost compassion.
Giving them as much information about your drug or alcohol addiction as you can allow your doctors to ensure a safe detox and create the most effective treatment plan for you.
2. Detox is the first step
You need to get sober before you can enter rehab.
This process tends to last between 3 and 10 days and will rid the body of any harmful substances.
The detoxification process will allow residents to be physically stable enough to undergo the next stages of rehab, so that they can learn more effectively.

Throughout your time in rehab, there will be an emphasis on educational classes.
During the early stages of recovery, you may be feeling a sense of denial about the seriousness of your condition or ambivalent about quelling your addiction for good.
The educational sessions are intended to encourage you to look at your addiction honestly and realistically, and learn about the ways to help you control your triggers healthily and change your behaviour.
You will typically learn about the following:
- The nature of alcoholism
- Effects of drugs and alcohol on your body
- Psychological effects of drug and alcohol abuse
- Consequences of prolonged addiction
4. Individual and Group Therapy sessions
These sessions are safe, confidential and free of judgement so that you can share your experiences honestly and freely.
They are designed to teach you the skills that you will need to continue living a sober life.
Learn more about the benefits of therapy sessions here.
You will learn how to:
- Recognise situations where you are likely to drink or use drugs, and avoid them.
- Seek to support from others who are experiencing the same thing.
- Share experiences to help yourself and others
- Deal with triggers and control cravings
5. Aftercare programs
Normally, a rehab treatment program will last up to 28 days. You will stay in a secure and relaxing environment free of temptation from alcohol or drugs.
Reintegrating into society after alcohol rehab can be difficult, so the best treatment centres will offer an extensive aftercare program which is suited to your individual needs.
Your aftercare program will tend to include:
- Intensive outpatient treatment
- Residence at a halfway house
- Attendance at 12-step meetings
- Weekly check-ins with a personal counsellor
